Histamme, serotonin, epinephrine, and norepineplirme were assayed from. venous blood samples prior to and twice during three hours of general anaesthesia with Innovar–nitrous oxide anaesthesia administered repeatedly (3 to 7 times) 1o eleven large, unpremedicated, trained dogs During the anaesthetics, pulmonary ventilation was controlled in order to prevent the development of respiratory acidosis or hypoxia Arterial and venous blood pressure and the electrocardiogram (lead II) were monitored, and the volume of urine excreted was collected and measured during each test period There were no appreciable or consistent alterations observed in the measurements of the biogenic amines Although the arterial blood pressure and puke rate were reduced, and the venous blood pressure was elevated, these changes weie no1 clinically important The electrocardiogram was also virtually normal throughout the tests Urine excretion was evidently depressed in spite of tl|ie mtiavenous administration of a moderate saline load, indicating that Innovar anaesthesia exerts an antidiuretic effect similar to that ol most general anaelsthetics Although full recovery from anaesthesia was relatively slow in these tests, no untoward effects were produced, and recovery can he accelerated clinically by adjusting the dosage during a long anaesthetic It was evident from these tests that Innovar–nitrous oxide can provide smooth general anaesthesia without causing gross alterations in neuroendocnne functions winch might provoke serious physiological disturbances
