1 Division of Anesthesiology University of Colorado Medical Center, Denver, Colorado

Sodium gamma hydroxybutyrate has been administered intravenously to dogs to determine the anaesthetizing dose, the toxic dose, the lethal dose, and the "anaesthetic index" Unpremedicated aninials exhibited severe paiiasympathomimetic activity Premedication with pentobarbital offset the undesirable effects of the drug, and raised the AI quite significantly Large doses of the butyrate were necessary for production of analgesia in rats The drug has been administered to 30 surgical patients Its use was chara– terized by maintenance of blood pressure and spontaneous respiration The subjects slept 2 to 3 hours Occasional periodic respiration was observed in the recovery room
