Planning of Anaesthetic Facilities

W. E. SPOEREL M.D., F.R.C.P.(c)1

1 Department of Anaesthesia, University of Western Ontario, London, Canada

An attempt has been made to define the scope of the specialty of anaesthesia and to develop a plan to relate the areas of interest to the anaesthetist in such a way as to obtain optimal working conditions. The resulting work area for the anaesthetist also presents advantageous relationships for other specialties, particularly surgery.

The plans of the University Hospital at the University of Western Ontario are now near completion, and it is forecast, barring unforeseen events, that the hospital will begin to operate in 1971. Only then shall we be able to test in practice the validity of the considerations and concepts embodied in these plans.

Note:

Presented at the Annual Meeting of the Canadian Anaesthetists' Society, in Ottawa, May 12 to 16, 1968.
