The Effect of Methoxyflurane on Baroreflex Control of Heart Rate in Man

G. MITTLER B.SC.1 and J. WADE M.D., F.R.C.P.(C)1

1 Department of Anaesthesia, University of Manitoba and Winnipeg General Hospital

Using the pressor test, the effects of methoxyflurane on the setting and sensitivity of the baroreflex were studied in man. At 1.5 MAC methoxyflurance, the slope (25.3±11.9) did not differ significantly from the control slope (22.8±12.5). At 2 MAC the slope (15.9 ±3.4) did not differ significantly from the control slope (17.9 ±1.9). At both concentrations of methoxyflurane, resting systolic blood pressure decreased significantly (27-39 mm Hg). Thus, methoxyflurane resets the baroreflex to the left, but does not alter its sensitivity.
