The Guillain-Barré Syndrome is a neurological disorder characterized by a progressive involvement of the motor system and, to a lesser degree, of the sensory and autonomic nervous systems. Mortality rate averages 20% although a rate of over 60% has been reported in the literature. Most deaths result from cardiovascular or respiratory complications. Anaesthetists should be acquainted with this syndrome because they are frequently called upon to prevent or to treat these complications.
