Single injection and continuous catheter peridural segmental anaesthesia are satisfactory for most surgical procedures below the diaphragm. The continuous catheter technique is limited in its use because of difficulty in preparing catheters, but should be more widely employed. Advantages, disadvantages, complications, and sites of injection are discussed.
