Single Injection and Continuous Catheter Peridural Segmental Block Anaesthesia for General Surgery

ANGUS MACMILLAN M.D, CM1

1 Department of Anaesthesiology, Vancouver General Hospital and University of British Columbia

Single injection and continuous catheter peridural segmental anaesthesia are satisfactory for most surgical procedures below the diaphragm. The continuous catheter technique is limited in its use because of difficulty in preparing catheters, but should be more widely employed. Advantages, disadvantages, complications, and sites of injection are discussed.
