Heated thermocouples have already proved their worth in assessing tissue perfusion. The principle involved is that of heat clearance. This technique has been employed to investigate the distribution of renal blood flow with particular reference to outer and inner cortical perfusion. The effect of varying the depth of anaesthesia with methoxyflurance and halothane upon the intrarenel distribution of blood flow has been studied. Methoxyflurance (but not halothane) appears to promote a reduction on outer cortical perfusion and a relative increase in inner cortical perfusion. This may be significant in the production of nephrotoxicity by mithoxyflurance, since it may lead to a more prolonged tubular contact with the toxic products of methoxyflurance metablism.
