DAVID J. STEWARD 1

1 Department of Anaesthesia, The Hospital for Sick Children, and the University of Toronto, Toronto

A disposable heat and moisture exchanger ("Artificial Nose") which is designed for use during endotracheal anaesthesia is described together with an evaluation of its performance. It has a low dead space, minimal resistance to gas flow, and is potentially capable of conserving 50 per cent of the respiratory water loss in the intubated patient.
