An on-going study at the Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital has already documented the consequences of the changes in the middle ear pressure during general anaesthesia with nitrous oxide and oxygen in patients undergoing surgical treatment for the tympano-ossicular system and for other types of pathology not involving the middle ear. Patients presenting Eustachian tube dysfunction and tympanic membrane abnormalities are at risk of auditory problems following general anaesthesia.
