Acute rise of body temperature to 40° C triggered by violent shivering was observed immediately after operation under epidural anaesthesia supplemented by nitrous oxide in a 65-year-old male patient. Cooling was not effective until the patient was anaesthetized with thiopentone, diazepam, and trifiupromazine to control the shivering.
