The management of patients with respiratory insufficiency, using intermittent positive pressure, has been discussed in detail. Emphasis has been laid on the underlying physiological problems and on the need for detailed specialized knowledge.
The available equipment and methods of use cire discussed, together with methods of monitoring assisted respiration. Problems of diagnosis of under-ventilation, general principles of management and the problems associated with the more common causes of respiratory insufficiency are discussed.
