Web Site Review

D. John Doyle, MD PhD

Toronto, Ontario

John Hopkin's School of Medicine's Interactive Respiratory Physiology http://omie.med.jhmi.edu/res_phys/Encyclopedia/Menu.HTML

This is an elegant little Web site from John Hopkins' Office of Medical Informatics Education that is a great introductory resource for learning the principles of respiratory Physiology.

The following topics are offered: Air Flow, Airway, Airway Resistance, Alveolar Pressure, Alveoli, Asthma, Body Plethysmography, Bronchitis, Chest Wall, Compliance, Dead Space, Diaphragm, Emphysema, Esophageal Balloon, Forced Expiration, Gas Dilution, Muscles of Respiration, Obstructive Ventilatory Defect, Pleural Pressure, Pneumothorax, Recoil Pressure, Restrictive Ventilatory Defect, Spirometry, and Surfactant. Two very important topics not included are the alveolar gas equation and calculation of venous admixture (shunt).

The material is well-illustrated with a number of excellent images and there are even QuickTime movies that can be viewed. However, to take advantage of this feature it may be necessary to download the QuickTime player from www.apple.com/quicktime. Although marred by occasional typographical and formatting errors, this site is still an excellent resource for individuals wanting an introduction to respiratory physiology. Still, it is time for the site, originally launched in 1995, to be updated with more material.
