This book provides the first detailed compendium of the hematological complications in obstetrics and gynecology. Many of the chapters, such as those on thrombophilias, deep vein thrombosis/pulmonary embolism (DVT/PE) in pregnancy, and low molecular weight heparins (LMWH) in pregnancy are excellent, up-to-date and highly recommended reading for obstetrical anesthesiologists. The chapter on postpartum hemorrhage, although suffering from some out-dated recommendations on topics such as use of the bleeding time, provides an excellent summary of the management of massive hemorrhage including considerations for interventional radiology. Unfortunately, the text suffers from some editing inconsistencies. Frequent repetition of information appears across chapters, for example, the treatment of thrombosis in pregnancy. Separate chapters on thrombophilias, DVT/PE in pregnancy, and LMWH in pregnancy, all discuss similar issues, and frequently present divergent opinions/recommendations. In addition, many chapters could have been enhanced with additional figures, tables, and listing of key points/recommendations to facilitate the reader’s efficiency in scanning for important data. The chapters would have benefited from a summary of key points and/or therapeutic recommendations in a visually separated area.

Despite the identified limitations, overall, Hematological Complications in Obstetrics, Pregnancy, and Gynecology will serve as a good reference text for physicians working in the field of obstetrics and obstetrical anesthesia.
